The Riverside Olympic product is among a 26-player squad named by Football Federation Australia to take part in a national training camp in Sydney this week.

The announcement continues a bizarre chain of events which saw Atkinson thrown an Olympic lifeline by the postponement of the Tokyo Games due to the coronavirus.

Initially suspended for the 2020 Games, the 21-year-old is again available for selection following the 12-month delay.

Atkinson was one of four Olyroos players banned for "unprofessional conduct" following a complaint in April 2019 arising from a night out in Cambodia.

The international suspension expired on August 10.

Asked about his possible reprieve by The Examiner in June, Atkinson replied: "I'd say so, yeah.

"It's one of those things, everything happens for a reason and if opportunity arises you've got to take it with both hands.

"It's every boy's dream ... well, it's every grown man's dream. To be on that stage would be terrific and it's always good to play for your country."

The Melbourne City defender is among 11 players in the squad that helped Australia qualify for the Olympics by securing third place at the AFC under-23 championships in Thailand.

At the camp the Australians will play friendly fixtures in Kogarah against A-League clubs Sydney FC (at 7pm on Thursday) and Macarthur FC (at 3pm on Tuesday, November 17).

Olyroos head coach Graham Arnold said players face a huge incentive.

"After a year of little national team activity, the players arrived eager to be back in camp and to resume the journey to Tokyo," he said.

"This group of players - and the many more we are monitoring in Australia and overseas - have the opportunity to be part of a special period in Olyroos history."

The Olympic Games have been rescheduled to run from July 23 to August 8, 2021.
