Tasmania Police are investigating a deliberately lit fire at the St Helens District High School kindergarten on Saturday afternoon.

The fire occurred in an enclosed carport next to the school's op shop on Circassian Street shortly after 1pm yesterday.

Senior Constable Josh Hayes said op shop staff discovered the fire and alerted emergency services.
He said it had resulted in the destruction of children's play equipment and learning supplies.
"Prompt attendance by Tasmania Fire Service crews contained the fire to the carport storage area," he said.
"An investigation into the cause of the fire has determined its cause to be deliberate. The value of property damaged as a result of the fire is estimated at $15,000.
"Investigations into the fire are continuing."
