In what would have been its second year hosting the popular event, the City of Launceston Lions Club said it had come to the regrettable decision not to go ahead in 2020.
Parade chairwoman Julianne Stevens said the club had hoped easing restrictions would allow for larger gatherings, but with limits still in place the parade would not be able to proceed safely.
"Public health is the primary concern, the complexities of organising and running the parade make it difficult to run safely and comply with the COVID-19 restrictions currently in place," she said.
"The Lions Club, City of Launceston has considered alternative activities to celebrate Christmas in the city, unfortunately any public gatherings are also subject to compliance with COVID-19 gathering restrictions and are not feasible to go ahead."
Last year thousands lined the streets for the annual parade, which has been held every year in the city for more than three decades.
It adds to a growing list of event cancellations, with the Launceston Carols by Candlelight also cancelled for 2020.
Ms Stevens said the club was immensely disappointed the parade - something that provides joy to countless children and brings Christmas spirit into the city - would no be held this year.
"We would like to thank our many sponsors and supporters that help the club bring the parade to life each year, and make a commitment that the Lions Club, City of Launceston Christmas Parade will be back in 2021 with many floats, bands, performers and of course the star attraction each year - Santa."
