A survey of 100 Tasmanian landlords has found almost half of them would avoid leasing their properties to workers in non-essential sectors like tourism and hospitality.

The Tasmanian Residential Rental Property Owners Association recently conducted a survey which asked landlords what actions they would consider in the future as a result of the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
Forty-six per cent said they would avoid leasing property to non-essential workers or to visa holders, 23 per cent said they would increase rent to make up for losses, and 28 per cent said they would consider renting their property out as short-stay accommodation.

Almost one-quarter said they would not undertake any of these actions.
Association president Louise Elliot this month wrote to Premier Peter Gutwein on the issue of land tax bills after many property owners started to receive notices which had increased between 20 and 40 per cent due to changes in land valuations.
She requested the government provide some form of relief to landlords who had to pay these increased bills while they were in a position where rental income had stalled.
Mr Gutwein said in a letter there were already adequate measures in place to assist landlords.
He said landlords could apply to the State Revenue Commissioner to defer a lump sum payment due to financial hardship or pay land tax in instalments.
