Agouda Ruler, trained at Wesley Vale by John Castles, used the sprint lane to run down hot favourite Rocknovertime in the Dandy Patch Stakes final and Melnrowley, trained at Stowport by Craig Hayes, led all the way in race record time in the Evicus Stakes final.

Both winners were driven by Latrobe reinsman Gareth Rattray.

Agouda Ruler was bred by Larry and Liz Nichols, of Latrobe, who retain ownership while Melnrowley was bred by Hayes and his wife Tania who race him with four partners.

Agouda Ruler has now won six races but Rattray said the well-bred gelding was "still big and gangly so, after a break, he'll come back stronger and hopefully a bit better."

He said Melnrowley was made to earn her win, copping pressure mid-race that he didn't expect.

"But she felt good down the back straight and I kicked through the corner.

"She's a great filly who can sit, sprint and stay - her strength is her greatest asset."
