Basketball Tasmania Northern development officer Nathan Brereton said the sport continued to grow in popularity in the state.
"It's growing from strength to strength and it was going to be an Olympic sport this year at this year's games," he said.
"I think it's got one of the highest participation rates for inner city municipalities.
"One of the positives of it is that you go from five players to three meaning more players get touches and opportunities - it's a really good development tool and we're really excited about where it's going."
In other news:
This weekend's tournaments will see teams of three in groups from under-12s to under-18s battle it out on the court.
This will also be the first event of its kind to be played at Riverbend Park's basketball courts.
"It's a fantastic resource, you have the playground in the background, you've got beautiful cafes," Brereton said.
"To have our first outdoor event is really exciting and something we're keen to get into on Sunday."
Brereton said should the weather prove an issue, the 3x3 Big Hustle will be moved to the Elphin Sports Centre.
Sophie Dean, 11, is a member of under-12 three-on-three team, the Layup Lasses.
"I'm pretty excited to play in a new location ... I probably prefer normal basketball but I still like the three-on-three," Sophie said.
The best teams from the day will solidify their chances to play in the NBL 3x3 Big Hustle national championships scheduled for April 2021.
