West Tamar mayor Christina Holmdahl said the announcement was a positive step for the growing suburb.
"When you consider that the present Legana population of just over 4000 people could go as high as 15,000 people in the next 10-15 years, a school is really a very very important part of that strategic plan," she said.
"The school is really necessary because some of the schools in our municipality are already bursting at the seams, so when it is open it really is going to be a fantastic asset for the municipality.

"I know that the community will be most interested in providing more input when the next consultations happen."
Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff said there will be more rounds of community consultation on site and school designs before the construction phase commences.
"We're expecting to have construction commence in 2022, with completion in 2024," he said.
"The community will continue to have their say on the school design.
"This is a $20 million investment in this community which is significant. Not only for the valuable community infrastructure that will be here for generations, but of course the employment in surrounding areas which we know is very much valued at this time so it's also an added bonus.
The government will release a tender for consultation on the project in November, with a concept master plan ready to be presented to the community in 2021.
The proposed plan for the site also includes a community sporting facility.
"While we haven't completely locked in what sports will be represented, the major sports certainly will - cricket, soccer and Aussie rules," Ms Holmdahl said.
"We're looking at a series of tennis courts as well, and all of that will be provided for the school but will also be used by the community out of hours.
"That's a major addition to the sporting facilities in this part of the municipality."
