"I saw a silverbeet that had gone to seed and it got me thinking about the life cycle of plants and I aligned that with the life cycle of motherhood," she said.
"It just captured how I felt about motherhood as well. The whole cycle of growing, decay, new life."
Strutt, who grew up on the West Coast and now resides in Oyster Cove, said the prize is great for emerging artists to get recognised, and to spotlight women's issues.

The artist thanked everyone who voted for her and those who encouraged her to enter.
The award also came with $3000 prize money.
