Fast forward to 2020 and everything he touches turns to gold with the 20-year-old winning his fourth premiership in as many seasons on Sunday.
Relocating from North Launceston to South Australian side Woodville-West Torrens at the end of last year, the former St Patrick's College student is very grateful for the opportunities he's been given.

"It's a huge relief but it just makes everything worth it from moving over here," he said.
"Since day one it has been awesome - pre-season with all the boys - they've been welcoming and it's obviously capped off a good year.
"Winning a grand final over here - it's massive."
Following an up-and-down month for the defender after an Achilles issue and a knock to the head in their semi-final, it was a battle for Mansell to be a part of the Eagles side.
That battle was certainly made worthwhile come Sunday with his mum, dad, sister and grandparents all in attendance, while the game fell on his dad - Brett's - birthday.
Getting off to a slow start, a nine-goal second quarter swung the game massively in the minor premiers' favour and reversed the semi-final result as they ran out 16.15 (111) to 10.8 (68) winners.
"We did some research during the week and North Adelaide have beaten us in the first quarter all year, so we wanted to get a good start but that didn't happen and they started well.
"But we took confidence in the last few games we played them and knew that we would come.
"The second quarter was massive, Jordan Foote was unreal - he had four goals and 17 touches at half-time.
"We knew it was going to come along and that second quarter set the game up for us."
While Foote's performance would see him named the Jack Oatley Medallist for best on ground, Mansell certainly put in a respectable showing himself - collecting 19 disposals, eight marks and five tackles - which he downplayed as just playing his role.
The Tasmanian had the same amount of touches as fellow young defender and Port Adelaide next generation academy member Lachie Jones who is a sure-fire thing to be drafted to the AFL but Mansell isn't getting too far ahead of himself.
"There's been a little bit of interest but if I don't get picked up, I'll be straight back over here."
