Selected by the Kangaroos with pick 49 of Tuesday's AFLW draft, Brown originally planned to spend this year playing with the Launceston Tornadoes in the NBL1 South.

But once that was cancelled, her love for football came calling.

"In 2017 I played one season for Ulverstone Football Club down the Coast in their league to help them out and get a team," she said.

"I had a few friends that played down there and one of my good friends was the coach so I laced on the boots and gave it a crack then.

"But obviously after that I was back into basketball again and I never really had the time to commit to TSL - all my weekends and weekdays were spent on NBL1."

Having played touch football with Launceston coach Ange Dickson, it was only natural for the 23-year-old to join the Blues.

Starting the season at full back and cycling through ruck duties, the 184cm Kanagaroo has enjoyed her stint up forward in the latter part of the year - kicking five goals in a star-studded line-up after booting 28 in eight matches at Ulverstone in 2017.

With fellow North Melbourne duo Daria Bannister and Mia King also at Launceston, North Melbourne kept a close eye on the Blues and thanks to Brown's versatility, athleticism and height, she began conversations with the club.

However, actually getting drafted still remained a shock for the former Kings Meadows High School and Launceston College student.

"I guess you never really know, they only had four picks and the father-daughter pick - it was pretty nervy.

"We had football training so I missed the first 35 picks I think so when we came off the park, [I] checked my phone, checked the picks that had already come out and my name wasn't there obviously.

"I got home just in time, turned it on just before the 44th pick, so coming into the 49th pick I knew it was the last one but I was super stoked to hear my name come out."

As for basketball, after two seasons at the Tornadoes and seven for the Latrobe Demons in the NWBU, Brown is unsure of what her career looks like going forward.

"Obviously I've taken a leap into football and that's going to be my priority, I'm really excited for the opportunity and I can't wait to get into it.

"If there's a potential to play basketball once the AFLW season is over, it's something I'd consider for sure.

"It was nice to play at the highest level - as a youngster growing up in Launceston that's where you want to get to playing basketball.

"So I grew up watching them play as a kid and that was a really proud moment for me when I was finally able to put the Torns guernsey on."

Brown's Blues face North Launceston on Saturday for a spot in the TSLW final.
