The conditional exemption was granted by Biosecurity Tasmania to South Australian company Mitolo Group in June, after no consultation with the Tasmanian industry.

DPIPWE and Biosecurity Tasmania announced on Wednesday the decision made by chief plant health manager Andrew Bishop would be independently reviewed.

The government department is under fire from producers, who are concerned about the biosecurity impacts of the decision, because it can open the door to pest and diseases.

Former Australian Government chief plant protection officer and plant pathologies Lois Ransom was engaged by DPIPWE and Biosecurity Tasmania to undertake the review.

A DPIPWE spokeswoman said Mrs Ransom was well placed to undertake the review.

"She brings extensive experience in all aspects of plant health and biosecurity risk management, including domestic and international trade policy and operations with the Australian Government," the spokeswoman said.

As part of her work, Mrs Ransom will review the responses received from local potato producers and community stakeholders following public consultation.

Farmers and the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association vegetable council said potato producers were shocked they were not consulted before the decision.

It was only revealed during parliamentary Question Time, after a question from Labor's primary industries spokesman Shane Broad.

TFGA vegetable council chairman Nathan Richardson said while he lamented the lack of consultation prior to the decision, he was happy with how it went afterwards.

He said producers and the council felt their concerns were being heard, and he was hopeful the review process would investigate all aspects of the decision.

"We will respect the decision that's made - that's the only fair thing to do," he said.

Biosecurity Tasmania and DPIPWE maintain the approval was given in line with import requirements, as SA demonstrated area freedom status from two declared diseases.
