Global climate emergency
WITH the global climate emergency it is suicidal to go back to the unsustainable resource exploitation that threatens our life support system. Green technology still uses resources, when we should be reducing our wastefulness and energy consumption, not adding to it.

To adapt and survive requires a different mentality, a reversal of priorities and a more socially responsible decision-making process. Despite the initiatives of many, the powerful few still have a disproportionate influence.
The state government offers financial support to businesses, while the feds take it away from those who would support businesses through custom.
Insane decision making will not produce a sane society, and there are signs of increasing irrationality everywhere. There will be no new normal, only a series of lurches as governments react to future crises.
Without the context of the global climate crisis, with its potential for sudden and extreme situations, people are left dangling like puppets. Who is pulling our strings?

Elsa de Ruyter, East Devonport.

Kerry Sims, Launceston.
NBL JackJumpers juxtaposition
JACKJUMPERS, being the chosen moniker for the new Tasmanian National Basketball League team, juxtaposes with the representative Tasmanian rugby union team of Jack Jumpers, established for 40 years, but not a name registered by the rugby union body.
If the newly created NBL team is to have a genuine Tasmanian social license, and not one of external imposition, the goodwill and generosity of spirit regarding the aforementioned question will be a test case for the newly formed franchise.
Kenneth Gregson, Swansea.
University fees hikes
THE federal government is set to more than double the cost of studying humanities at university in favour of degrees that are seemingly more job relevant.
This will increase the 'Trumpeture' of our country and do nothing towards the value-adding of a healthy, habitable and functional culture.
