But she says sadly, the number of people seeking support continues to grow.

"We are always full. Our statistics show we don't ever meet 50 per cent of demand," Ms Murphy said.

"Number wise, we have 50 requests for accommodation each month, but we can only house around 14."

The shelter provides assistance in the form of short-term crisis support accommodation to women and families, often leaving situations involving domestic violence.

The support is set to be bolstered by a $1.9 million federal government grant under the Safe Places Emergency Accommodation program. This, alongside $4 million from the state government, is helping the shelter build more units.

"It is such fantastic news, it's going to double our capacity," Ms Murphy said.

Federal member for Bass Bridget Archer said the grant round was extremely competitive, but the shelter was a worthy recipient.

"An extra 15 units altogether this money will fund. That will be a really welcome, valuable resource here in Launceston," Ms Archer said.

Ms Murphy said the shelter had seen an increase in requests for support from people who would otherwise be forced into homelessness.

One of the areas in high demand is supported accommodation for single women.

"There are single women units, we're getting another four of those. Currently we only have two, that's another demand increase that we haven't been able to meet," Ms Murphy said.

"We've lodged plans with the council to be approved, we're hoping in the next twelve months they'll be started," Ms Murphy said.
