The Tasmanian government is encouraging even those with even the most mild of symptoms to not take any risks and just get tested.
Director of Public Health, Dr Mark Veitch said, "we do not want Tasmanians to think that their symptoms could only be hay fever without first ruling out coronavirus".
Some symptoms of COVID-19 and hay fever are strikingly similar - a cough or runny nose - and Dr Veitch said there is evidence to say some people with COVID-19 initially thought they were suffering from hay fever.
While there are differences between the symptoms, general rasping while breathing or a loss of smell or taste can be experienced during a particularly bad bout of hay fever.
Dr Veitch said one in four Tasmanian's are thought to live with hay fever, but a familiarity with the ailment is no reason to forego a test.
Dr Veitch said, while it may be frustrating to get tested and isolate until you receive your results, the importance of ensuring potential COVID-19 cases do not go untreated cannot be understated.
"It is very important that, as a community we do not miss coronavirus cases with symptoms like hay fever," Dr Veitch said.
"While you wait for the result, please stay at home. Don't go to work or school. If your result is negative, see your GP about controlling the symptoms and get a certificate to allow you to attend work or school."
Tasmania has not recorded any local transmission of COVID-19 in four months, and there are no active cases on the island.
