BetaPark is a new rock climbing gym on Forster Street at Invermay that opened its doors last week.

Owner Tommy Krauss is also the co-owner of Rock It Climbing in Hobart.

He said he wanted to expand into Northern Tasmania an industry that is an increasingly popular pastime.

"We see especially in Hobart that it's popular, it's hard to judge how popular it is in Launceston because there hasn't been a facility like this," Mr Krauss said.

The centre is designed for bouldering: a form of rock climbing that doesn't use ropes with mats laying beneath the walls should a climber lose their footing.

"Bouldering's about simple movement and exploring your own climbing ability," Mr Krauss said.

"It used to be perceived as more advanced but the way we do it - the easiest climbs are easier than climbing a ladder so it's definitely for all abilities.

"It's increasing in popularity everywhere in the world and it was just about time that we built something for it here for people up in Launceston."

About 50 tonnes of timber and 62,000 screws were used in the construction of the gym.

Mr Krauss said assembling the gym took a while with lots of hammering and lots of hours.

"The warehouse is a perfect location for us ... we put all the infrastructure in - all the bathrooms, change rooms, training facilities and mezzanine, that's all from us," he said.

Mr Krauss said the simplicity of the gym and its night hours made it accessible for avid rock climbers and casuals alike.

"It's very social because the barrier to enter is really low - you don't need to bring anything and you can rent shoes here," he said.

"You don't need a climbing partner, you don't need rope skills, you don't need to know anything. As long as you have fun and enjoy it.

"It's been really busy ... really good everyday and we've got plenty of good community feedback, everyone's loving it."

National rock climbing competitor Charlotte Garden said it was good to have more than one practice facility for rock climbing in Tasmania.

"The walls here are amazing ... they're the best in Tassie pretty much. It's nice just to have a new facility that's dedicated to bouldering," she said.
