It's the 57th time grade 12 students from Launceston Church Grammar have completed the 24-hour long, 80 kilometre walk for charity.

COVID restrictions meant this year's event nearly didn't go ahead, postponed since April. School principal Richard Ford says it was one of the most important events on the grade 12 student calendar.

"We spoke to the students about what was the most important thing for them in terms of their grade 12, and they said the walkathon was the one thing they didn't want to finish their time at Grammar not doing," Mr Ford said.

"They are just so committed to helping others that of all the things they want to do in grade 12, it's a gift to others rather than just something for themselves," he said.

This year's student cohort chose to support the charity Fight MND. Grade 12 student Molly Woolcock said this was added motivation for her classmates during the walk.

"Motor neurone disease has affected a few people in our grade, and Fight MND is the only charity in Australia for motor neurone disease that has a sole purpose of finding a cure," Molly said.

Fellow grade 12 student Thomas Foster said the walk itself wasn't without challenge - students faced wet and windy conditions, with some injuries and blisters along the way.

"I think the cause helped us, but also the companionship of my peer group all motivated each other, or walked to the back when someone wasn't having a good time, and that was reciprocated among the group," Tom said.

"I'm pretty exhausted, the legs are quite sore and I'm a bit wet, but overall I'm not feeling too bad," added Molly.

The students have raised more than $46,000 and aim to take their fundraising tally above $50,000 by the end of the school year.

For now, they're looking forward to the start of school holidays for some well needed rest.

"This weekend is going to be feet up, a lot of sleep and maybe a bath," said Molly.
