In State Parliament on Thursday, Labor leader Rebecca White said Mr Shelton had on Wednesday failed to rule out forced amalgamations of volunteer fire stations.

"Can you rule out amalgamating the Tasmanian Fire Service with the State Emergency Service?" Ms White asked.

Amid constant interjections, Mr Shelton denied any amalgamation plans for the SES and TFS.

"First, let me reiterate that the SES and Tasmania Fire Service are two separate identities run under the same department - the DPFEM - and there is no reason to change that," he said.

"There are no plans for forced closures, as has been insinuated, to close our fire brigades.

"Yesterday I ruled that out. Labor keep repeating it, but they are ignoring the facts."

Mr Shelton struggled to read his notes as several points of order were called.

He accused Labor and the Greens of a " fascination with closing things".

"They are experts in closing things," MrShelton said.

Greens leader Cassy O'Connor interjected arguing Ms White's question was serious.

"For the minister to devolve into the cheap politics that he is, disrespects the question and all the stakeholders who are concerned to ensure we have good fire management in this state," Ms O'Connor said.

Mr Shelton eventually said there would be no closures.

"There are going to be no forced closures or amalgamations. Are you happy?"

Labor emergency management spokeswoman said Mr Shelton's performance in parliament should concern all Tasmanians.

"We know the Minister has had discussions about amalgamating the SES and the TFS," Ms Butler said.

"Mark Shelton's awkward attempts to gloss over explicit questions about amalgamations are not fooling anyone.

"It is vital Mr Shelton comes clean and stops misleading Tasmanians."
