Producer Liz Bennett said they picked Flashdance as the 80s is still popular and the musical hasn't seen many Australian audiences.
"We found Flashdance and it's only been done in Australia once, and it's never been done by a school, so we got permission by the United States to do it," she said.
Flashdance tells the story of 19-year-old Alex, a welder at a steel mill and night dancer at Harry's Bar, with ambitions of securing a place at Shipley Dance Academy and becoming a professional dancer.
Actor Jordan Moss, who plays the villain CC, said Launceston College has broadened his horizons as originally he was not so keen on musicals.
"When I heard it was Flashdance I was like, 'oh cool, another musical I can get to know and love'," he said. "It's a very colourful show, very flamboyant, the dances are so good, it's been a lot of fun, and I'm very glad to be a part of it."
In other news:
During the pandemic, students learnt the choreography and songs online. When the students were allowed to go back to school, rehearsals were capped at groups of 25. At the end of term two the students spaced out and completed a full run through of Act One together.
Lauren Colson who plays Kiki in Flashdance and previously played the lead in Matilda, said it was hard to not have the motivation of others around while learning at home.
"The energy in your bedroom is obviously different to having a full group of people rehearsing in one room," she said.
Ms Colson said she loves musicals and this one is definitely worth coming to watch as it's not something people have seen before.
"It's so much fun and it's got all the classic songs from the movie that everyone knows and loves. It's just one for all ages, everyone would love it."
The school hopes the show will run from December 7-9 public health advice and theatre permitting.
