Launceston's latest Malaysian addition is serving up a plethora of unique cuisines on York Street for local foodies to enjoy.

Head chef and Dave's Noodles owner David Lam opened the Malaycious with Li Hong Chew and Jia Wei Tan, who were fresh out of university.

Lam said he had been wanting to open an authentic Malaysian cafe/restaurant for some time as there hadn't been anything like it in Tasmania.

"The boys had graduated from uni so I said to them we should set up an Malaysian cuisine business," he said.

"There's lots of Chinese, Thai and Japanese food - but there's nothing like Malaysian ... a lot of people travel to Malaysia and like this type of food."

In addition to Malaycious' authentic Malaysian menu, the business boasts late hours for those looking for a nocturnal feed.

"We play at uni with their badminton club and usually we play until 11 o'clock and usually after we go somewhere for supper," Mr Chew said.

"But we have nowhere to go except for Maccas.

"And on Friday and Saturday pubs and clubs are open so we thought it would be a good idea to be open until midnight."

Mr Chew said the Hainanese chicken rice had been a particularly popular dish with Malaycious' patrons.

Mr Tan said the business also served authentic Malaysian tea, or teh tarik, as well as Malaysian-style coffee.

"We actually sold out of the coffee in the first 10 days ... I didn't expect the sale to be that good but we ran out straight away," he said.

Mr Chew said COVID-19 had delayed the opening of Malaycious, however Tasmania's current situation made for a relatively normal opening.

"Actually it hasn't really affected us because there haven't been any new cases in a while," Mr Chew said.

"The economy here is going back to normal a bit ... we were planning to open this last year and then it hit so we hesitated.

"I was worried earlier in the year about opening but we just kept doing the renovations, and step-by-step here we are."
