Sharp Airlines will operate the service three times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays between the capital and Flinders and King islands.

Premier Peter Gutwein said the government would underwrite the service for four months at a cost of $225,000.

"This trial period gives Tasmanians the opportunity to support the service and will determine its future viability and the commitment of the airline to sustain the service," he said.

Mr Gutwein said both councils on the islands would waive fees and charges for use of airports.

"Importantly, Tasmanians are able to use their travel vouchers to explore the islands," he said.

Labor leader Rebecca White said improved air access to the islands would support their tourism businesses recover from the economic impacts of coronavirus.

"It will be really important for Tasmanians to support these flights and to get across to King and Flinders islands to support those operators who no doubt have been doing it really tough," she said.

West by North West chief executive Tom Wootton said the direct flights would be a gamechanger for King Island.

"Due to relatively limited air access from mainland Tasmania, King Island has been unable to meaningfully participate in the Make Yourself at Home campaign, until now" he said.

"The island traditionally relies on the interstate visitor market, but has long been eager to welcome more Tasmanians".

Tourism Northern Tasmania chief executive Chris Griffin said latent demand for travel between Flinders Island and Hobart had been known for some time.

"Direct flights between the capital and Whitemark remove a major barrier of distance and time for Hobartians considering an island visit," he said.

"The island is a standout nature-based destination with amazing local produce, and one of the most welcoming island communities you'll ever want to be hosted by."
