Launceston Tornadoes head coach Sarah Veale, chairman Neil Grose and Generation Netball Club founder Narelle Cameron last week had their say.

With Veale's crew facing regular 6am shifts at Elphin Sports Centre or having to train away from the centre, Grose suggested the state's AFL bid could assist a new multi-purpose venue.

Cameron's comments were similar, dreaming for Launceston to get its own indoor netball centre.

The trio's words have since prompted a response from City of Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten, who is aware of the shortfall in the number of indoor courts.

Acknowledging the growing participation rates in sports like basketball and futsal, he expects the trend to continue.

"There hasn't been a new indoor sports complex developed in Launceston in more than 35 years and during this time, the demand for indoor recreation facilities has continued to grow," he said.

"Established in 1964, the Elphin Sports Centre only has four courts available, and does not have the capacity to service the Northern Tasmanian community to the level that is required.

"More than two decades later, the Silverdome was built with the capacity to host three to four courts inside the velodrome track - both of these facilities are owned by the state government.

"The council has been working with the state government to progress several proposals that will assist in addressing this and we will have more to say on this soon.

"We also know that with our existing court capacity, Launceston has a very limited ability to attract and host large-scale sporting events, when compared with comparable mainland cities such as Ballarat and Bendigo - both of which have recently developed sports complexes that provide In excess of 12 courts.

"It is also worth noting that there are three courts proposed to be built as part of the Northern Suburbs recreation hub, for which the council received $15 million in funding from the federal government at the last election. Planning for that facility is ongoing"
