A two-car crash at Bridgenorth resulted in two deaths, while another person died in a crash at Huonville in the state's South.
It brings the total road toll to 27 deaths in 2020, compared to 21 to the same time last year.
Two people from Newnham, both in their 80s, were killed in the incident at Bridgenorth, which occurred about 2.30pm this afternoon at the intersection of Bridgenorth and Long Plains roads.
Speaking to the media at the scene of the crash, Detective Inspector Kim Stevens said the pair were driving south on Long Plains Road in a blue Toyota Corolla sedan, approaching the intersection with Bridgenorth Road.
"It appears at this stage that they've gone through the intersection without giving way," he said.
In other news:
A white Toyota Hilux utility, travelling west on Bridgenorth Road, collided with the Corolla.
The driver of the Hilux, a 19-year-old male from Rosevale, and his 20-year-old male passenger, of Riverside, were taken to the Launceston General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
There was one witness who observed the crash and is assisting police.
"Unfortunately that would have been tragic for them as well to witness this," Detective Inspector Stevens said.
The cause of the incident is being investigated, but it's thought both vehicles involved were in working order and there is no indication so far that speed was a factor.
A report is being prepared for the coroner.
Detective Inspector Stevens said crashes such as this were "tough" on the first responders.
"These are tough on everyone: our volunteer fireys, our career fireys, our police ... the witnesses. Everyone," he said.
With a shocking three road deaths recorded in the state in a single day, Detective Inspector Stevens said police were "pleading" with people to drive with caution.
"Obviously as COVID's releasing, people are getting out more," he said. "We would just plead [with] people to take care."
A 50-year-old woman from Waterloo died in the fatal two-car crash on the Huon Highway this morning.
Her 14-year-old passenger was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital with minor injuries.
The Huonville crash happened near the entrance to the town's waste transfer station.
