LAUNCESTON CITY CAPTAIN SAM RIDGARD
- Born: Derby
- Age: 27
- Schools: Saint Werburgh's Primary, Landau Forte College, Derby College, Manchester Metropolitan University
- Clubs: Holbrook Sports from when I was 15 to 21, LA Galaxy Orange County FC and then Belper United which, like Holbrook, is in the East Midlands Counties League
- Job: Football Tasmania coach and production labourer with Island Block and Paving
Sum up the season thus far?
Frustrating. The first game in the Lakoseljac Cup against Devonport was fantastic and could not have been a better start but we just need to find our feet in the league.

Who's been your best player?
I'd have to say Rob (Gerrard). I know I live with him so I've got to say that but he's just kept us ticking. Dan Nash has also been exceptional as a back-up keeper while Lachy Clark has been injured.
Most annoying teammate?
That's easy. Nick Thorne. I love him to bits but at training he's always smiling, energetic and has something to say.
Describe Roger Hardwicke's coaching style?
He wants to play out from the back, through the thirds and out to the wide players. He's good, he's honest, has a go at you when you need it and pushes you to be better. He's very specific in what he wants us to do and knows it will eventually pay off.
What do you most like about playing at Prospect Park?
It's a family club and a lot of people are coming to watch us play. With my relationship with the kids through the coaching I'm doing, a lot of parents are coming along and supporting and bringing their kids which is really good. There's a lot of support for the club from the community.
Most under-rated player in the league?
Nick Mearns with Olympia. He just does everything simple, makes their midfield tick and breaks the play up really well.
Your best moment in soccer?
Meeting Zlatan Ibrahimovic when I was at LA Galaxy. He was my favourite player growing up so I was shaking when I met him, but he lived up to expectations.
Favourite player?
If not Zlatan then Steven Gerrard for his quality, leadership and loyalty to Liverpool. He could do everything and I was gutted that he didn't win the league with them.
Which player can you compare yourself to?
James Milner but hopefully not as boring. I love his workrate on and off the ball, the fact he played in different positions and his leadership. He's someone I definitely look up to a lot.
How could Tasmanian soccer be improved?
They need an A-League team. That would be huge for Tasmania and give players an incentive to aspire to play for that team. The coverage would be massive for the state.
RIVERSIDE OLYMPIC CAPTAIN TAYLOR NEILSON
- Born: Launceston
- Age: 28
- Schools: Riverside Primary, Riverside High, Launceston College, UTas
- Clubs: Riverside Olympic and Beachside in Hobart while I was at uni. I played half a dozen games when we won the Southern Championship and won reserves best and fairest that year.
- Job: Teacher at Kings Meadows High School.
Sum up the season thus far?
Three positive results against Devonport, Kingborough and Launnie City and although Olympia and Glenorchy were not what we wanted, we were still getting attacks away and shots on target which is a positive compared to last year.
Who's been your best player?
Tom Prince and Nil Sanz have been good but if I had to nail down the catalyst for our increase in form it would have to be Fletcher Fulton. He provides an extra dynamic up front. He's not 18 yet and did not play much senior soccer at Launceston United last year so this is his first real season against men.
Most annoying teammate?
That would have to be Fletcher as well. His mouth is going all training and he commentates the games, every pass and shot. He's always letting us know everything.
Describe Alex Gaetani's coaching style?
He's a very qualified coach and the way he wants us to play is how football should be played. He is very cool with players, not in the least authoritarian and accommodates different styles into the overall team. I cannot speak highly enough of Alex. I've played under a lot of coaches and he would be the most in touch with a playing group I've ever known.
What do you most like about playing at Windsor Park?
I enjoy the way our club operates. We are a community club and service a large community and I love how the club does that for all levels from juniors right up to NPL for those that want to aim high.
Most under-rated player in the league?
Liam Gilmore does not get the rap he deserves as a great technical player but it would have to be Will Humphrey for someone who just does their role every week. He is invaluable to what we do. And Charlie Dyer at Launceston City. He is technically sound, can play anywhere and has a great game sense.
Your best moment in soccer?
Winning the Northern Championship with Riverside in 2018. In the last game we needed to draw and ended up beating Devonport 2-1. That was my biggest achievement and a nice reward for a few years of hard work for a great playing group including players like Ryan McCarragher and Will Rodman.
Favourite player?
Dan Brown at South Hobart always plays to the best interest of the team.
Which player can you compare yourself to?
I'd love to say Paul Scholes because he is the pinnacle but I don't play long balls like he used to so I'd say Javier Mascherano of Barcelona because he too was a midfielder who then played down back and wasn't very tall. He was known for playing out from the back which is Alex's thinking and probably Pep Guardiola's too. They're very comparable, those two.
How could Tasmanian soccer be improved?
Investing in coaches. It's a no-brainer and needs to be led by the clubs because it's in their best interest. We've seen an increase in C-licence coaches and need to see more B and A coaches. We need avenues for coaches, we have them for players. And we need more specialist youth coaches to invest basic skills in our best under-sevens, eights and nines.
