Greens leader Cassy O'Connor tabled the e-petition and hard copy signatures, totaling 13,082 signatures, in the House of Assembly on Wednesday.

It is the biggest e-petition in the Parliament's history.

Ms O'Connor said the fourth attempt at VAD, a bill which will be tabled in the upper house by Mersey independent MLC Mike Gaffney later this month, was different to the previous bills because the legislation had the politics taken out of it.

"It is robust and it is strongly supported by the Tasmanian people," Ms O'Connor said.

Ms O'Connor urged members to vote on the bill with their conscience.

"VAD is already legal in Victoria and Western Australia. The evidence from those states is that the laws work as intended, and the fearmongering of ideological opponents is baseless," she said.

"It's past time Tasmania's laws reflect the compassion and respect for human dignity found right across our community."

The petition has been spearheaded by Your Choice Tas founders Jacqui and Natalie Gray.

The sisters began advocating to legislate VAD after their mother Diane died from gastric cancer last year.

"Our campaign initially started out as a promise to our mum in her final days of 2019 to advocate for VAD to be legalised in Tasmania," Jacqui said.

"Since then our campaign has become a voice for all our loved ones who have died in intolerable pain and have not had the right to choose a peaceful death through VAD."

Jacqui said their mother's experience with cancer had been a living hell.

"From an emotional point of view, we desperately want this legislation passed," she said.

Natalie said her mother had been aware of how people with stomach cancer died and she had raised the topic of taking her own life with her family.

Natalie said this was not a conversation anyone should ever have to have with a loved one.

"Hopefully this legislation will stop other people from going through the trauma and the pain that mum did, and we've endured since," she said.
