McCoull began with a race-to-race double on the Bill Ryan-trained Sh'bourne Renegade ($3.20) and the Mark Ganderton-trained Ancona ($3.70), and finished the day in the same way when he piloted Willby Rules ($2.40) and Sh'bourne Rebel ($5.20) to victory for Nigel Schuuring and Shaun Nicholls respectively.

"I'm getting some better rides now which makes all the difference in the world, so I'll make hay while the sun shines," McCoull said.

"Willby Rules was always going to be tough to beat on his last run, but I thought my best win for the day was on Bill Ryan's horse.

"He was probably my best chance but he was stepping up in grade a bit today, and I think he'll be a very progressive horse."

Wesley Vale trainer John Keys combined with jockey Troy Baker to provide the biggest upset of the day when outsider O'lohn Star ($38.80) defeated a quality field to take out the Kevin Sharkie Open Handicap over 1150m.

Despite being four-wide during parts of the trip, the eight-year-old gelding still had plenty in the tank for the run home to defeat Balearic by half a length, with Gee Gee Double Dee in third.

Keys said he couldn't work out why O'lohn Star was at such long odds.

"He bled in Melbourne (last year) and been treated accordingly ever since, but I think he just needed a decent break," Keys said.

"He trialled sensationally behind Mystic Journey here the other week, so I'm not sure why he was $38.80."

Apprentice jockey Peter Lui made a successful comeback from injury when he steered Gee Gees Cricket ($2.50) home in a Benchmark 60 Handicap over 1350m.

Lui has been sidelined since early March when he broke his ankle, but rewarded the patience of Leon, Dean and Trent Wells by leading all the way on the favourite.

"Peter hurt himself before the world ended and it's taken a while to get him back to here," Dean Wells said.

"He's worked hard and it's nice to see him get a result."

Trainer Adam Trinder expects a better showing from star mare Mystic Journey in her next outing after a disappointing eighth in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.

Sent out a $6 equal-second favourite, Trinder said five-year-old never got going on the soft track.

"She stepped away slowly and was forced to work up the hill and was on a wide trail the whole way," Trinder said

"Billy (Egan, jockey) said she just couldn't find her rhythm and was never happy at any stage.

"She pulled up okay and will move forward to the Memsie Stakes, and if the track is rated a five or better I trust we'll see a much-improved result."
