On a night when race winner Joshua Cheptegei, of Uganda, delivered on his plan to claim the world record, the 25-year-old King Islander clocked a season's best of 13:13.22.

Cheptegei went an incredible 22 seconds inside his personal best with a new global benchmark of 12:35.36 to win by 16 seconds at the opening Diamond League meet of the season.

McSweyn, who only arrived in Europe earlier this week, was eight seconds outside his personal best for the distance of 13:05.23, set in Brussels two years ago.

Keen to improve results ahead of the rescheduled Olympic Games, he is basing himself in London with Melbourne training partner Matt Ramsden who acted as a pace-maker in Monaco.

Richie Porte again made the business end of the latest stage in the Criterium du Dauphine before settling for 13^th place.

After a ninth-place finish had pushed him up to seventh overall, the 35-year-old Launceston rider dropped to 10^th after coming in 42 seconds behind Italian winner Davide Formolo on the 157km third stage from Corenc to Saint-Martin-de-Belleville in southern France.

Fresh from three podium finishes already this season, Monaco-based Porte's performance led the SBS commentary team to suggest the Trek-Segafredo team leader is in fine form ahead of his 10^th Tour de France at the end of the month.

"I feel like Richie is riding with a real air of confidence," observed Matt Keenan, prompting Dave McKenzie to add: "He's just really matured mentally as well as physically."

Porte is 35 seconds off the lead of Primo Roglic with two stages remaining and Le Tour due to start on August 29.

Two Tasmanians were named in the Australian T20 and ODI squad for the upcoming tour of England.

Hobart-born duo Riley Meredith and Matthew Wade both made the cut for Justin Langer's teams.

It is the first senior selection for 24-year-old right-arm quick Meredith who began playing for both Tasmania and the Hobart Hurricanes in 2017-18 and joins fellow young guns Josh Philippe and Daniel Sams in the squad.

"We are very excited by these young players who we believe are all capable of playing a role in the Australian set-up in coming years," said national selector Trevor Hohns.

The travelling squad will also have plenty of Tasmanian support in high performance coach Troy Cooley (formerly of Mowbray), performance analyst Dene Hills (Wynyard) and newly-appointed selector George Bailey (South Launceston).

Games begin on September 4.
