Commonwealth senior card
MY understanding of Commonwealth means it is nationwide and common to all the people. Why is Tasmania one of the states where people entitled to this card can not obtain rebates on their water, electricity, rate, gas bills and so on? Where is the equity here?

COVID-19 outbreak responsibility
WHY can't the Victorian public take the blame for the second round of the virus and not try to blame the federal and state politicians? It seems they couldn't follow the rules placed on them when the COVID-19 appeared and therefore spread it around the community. The infected numbers are greater than the first wave, thus locking Victoria into lockdown possibly to Christmas.

Tasmanian prison population
PAGE 17 of the state government's SGS social-economic report, created to justify building the new Northern Regional Prison, says that by 2030 the inmate population could reach 1200 inmates. The same page of the report also says the existing infrastructure can support 743 inmates.
Building a new prison with a capacity of 270 inmates means there would still be an expected shortfall of 187 beds by the time the new prison is built, leaving our state with not one but two overcrowded prisons at the expense of the taxpayers.
According to Department of Justice figures (The Examiner, August 6), the inmate population is currently between 660 and 680.
Everyone around the State of Tasmania should be asking why do the government and Department of Justice expect the prison population to almost double in just 10 years?

Launceston council job well done
THE City of Launceston council just finished an upgrade of Granville Street which has completely transformed the once eyesore into a new and fresh street which has improved that area out of sight.
A new modern look that sets the street off nicely. Congratulations, an excellent improvement for our suburb.

Gel blasters ban just stupid
I HAVE met people who have suffered genuine psychological trauma such as an ambulance driver who attended a fatality only to discover it was his next-door neighbour or the fireman trapped in a burning home.
To suggest that a plastic multi-coloured sci-fi gel ball gun could cause fear intense enough to cause this kind of trauma is stretching credulity to its limits.
Why doesn't Tasmania Police publish photos of these toys?

Major Projects Bill concern
WITH the Major Projects Bill on the horizon, communities everywhere wait to see how the members they voted for in their electorates will vote on this legislation.
Democracy is precious.
A bill that in any way limits the voice of the people and silences councils and communities from having a proper say on the places they live in and love, has no role in a democratic society.
