Neil O'Brien, a senior auctioneer at Armitage Auctions said the chairs are becoming quite rare to find, especially in a set of four or six and it is even rarer to get that price for just a single one.

"For a single chair to get that sort of a price was a remarkable result. We have seen prices like that for sets or single chairs if they're unique but just for a dining chair, that was an outstanding result."

The chair was crafted by Harry Hearn, the brother-in-law of George Peddle, both of whom created similar chairs for the Tasmanian Government Railway waiting rooms.

Armitage Auctions transitioned to online auctions because of the pandemic and this transition has been highly successful.

Mr O'Brien attributes the rise in selling prices to the ease of bidding on items in the comfort of the individuals own home.

"People have it both ways, they can come and view the items then they can go and bid in the comfort of their own home," he said.

"We think the convenience is making it a lot easier for people to bid now."
