Organisers Amanda Crawford and Steve Henty said the idea came from brainstorming how to host community-minded events during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We were thinking about the events that can't happen because of COVID-19, and we could organise an event that's accessible by a lot of people that might still be a bit cautious about sitting in the cinema," Mr Henty said.
"It's time to be innovative and change the way we do things."
The films shown will be Peter Rabbit and Labyrinth.
A 10-metre-high blow-up cinema screen has been hired for the event and will be placed at the Vincent Street side of the car park.
In other news:
To ensure a labyrinth of cars isn't created, vehicles will enter via the Elizabeth Street car park exit, then exit via the entrance on the ground floor.
Mr Henty said it was important attendees had working FM radios, as it will be the only way to hear the films.
With social distancing still vital, Mr Henty said it was a great chance to go back to the days of old where drive-in cinemas were commonplace.
"There's been DJ sets and rock concerts around the world where people are rocking up in their cars and doing it through their radios," he said.
"From what I understand that has meant a lot of cars' batteries have gone flat, but we have a jumper kit coming with us so no one will get stuck."
Though the Peter Rabbit screening has sold out, Mr Henty said a few spaces remained for Labyrinth.
Given the popularity of the event, Mr Henty said it may lead to more drive-in events in Launceston in the future.
He said he hoped to work with the Harvest Market, who have also made plans to establish drive-in cinema events in the Cimitiere Street car park.
"We're really excited that people have jumped on board... there's a lot of great comments on the Facebook page," Mr Henty said.
"If the infrastructures here that'll make it even easier for us... it would be great to support the Harvest Market... help them run an event locally."
