The loose term "essential worker" has been thrown about quite a bit during this pandemic as a catch-all for everyone who still had a job to go to.
Supermarket workers, considered by many an entry-level job, aged care workers, and cleaners have been the unsung heroes who have worked tirelessly to ensure that the world and the economy still ticked over.
RELATED STORY: Launceston nurse in Melbourne and ready to help
However, it is arguably our health professionals, namely nurses, to whom we owe the biggest thanks.
Nurses and doctors and other medical staff turned up to work each day putting their health at risk - and doing their job in the COVID-19 front line.
During the height of the outbreak in the North-West, nurses at the Launceston General Hospital and other hospitals increased their workload to cater to an entire hospital that had been closed down.
And now, a small number of Tasmanian nurses have volunteered to put their health on the line again and volunteer to help out the outbreak in Victoria.
It is understandable why the community would feel concerned about nurses heading to Victoria.
In times of crisis, people tend to buckle down and think about their backyard - will we have enough nurses, how will we make sure they don't bring COVID back to Tasmania. But the important thing to know is that nurses know more than most how critical it is to minimise the spread.
Having seen it first-hand, nurses in Tasmania would be hyper-aware of the importance of tools like social distancing, face masks (and other PPE) as well as quarantine protocols that are in place for all Tasmanians returning from Victoria.
Fear makes us gravitate to a glass half empty scenario, but taking a step back shows us that what we should be feeling is gratitude - for the bravery of our nurses, who are going into COVID hot spots to help Victoria in its time of need.
That bravery ought to be commended.
So, thank you, nurses, for putting yourself on the front line yet again and the sacrifices you make every day.
