The demand for removal came in a no-confidence motion, which was passed by 80 staff on Thursday night.

Board chairman Nigel Bailey responded: "I wish to make it clear that the board is steadfast and united in its support of the headmaster and the direction of the school."

"The board makes no apologies for requiring the continued improvement of the learning and pastoral outcomes of students."

The no-confidence motion represents a resurgence of staff dissatisfaction, which came to a head when two no-confidence motions were passed in March during Enterprise Bargaining Agreement negotiations.

Sources said that dissatisfaction, including over staff appointments, had been bubbling away during the COVID-19 lockdown.

A proposal for a letter to the headmaster a month ago was almost universally supported by 19 heads of department and heads of houses.

The latest motion has given a deadline of next Wednesday for action.

He said the school employed 265 staff.

"While this result is disappointing, equally disappointing is the course of action taken," he said.

"During the Enterprise Agreement negotiations earlier in the year, a key component of the agreement was that the school improve consultation with staff."

He said that a Consultative Forum had been established at the school and had met twice.

It is understood that a Culture Survey promised in March has been completed by an independent expert provider but some staff lack confidence in its methodology.

"The results are being collated for presentation to board, executive and staff," Mr Bailey said.

Independent Education Union representative David Brear confirmed that a meeting had been held.
