Both reporting as if the event was conducted on a level playing field. Was the Queen exonerated?
Her secretary Martin Charteris did the heavy lifting ensuring Sir John Kerr was kept at arm's length from the Queen. So well played Sir Martin. This does not make the dismissal politically neutral by any means. Kerr sought out and acted on the advice of Charteris - a citizen from a foreign country and confidant of the Queen.
Supply was able to be blocked by Malcolm Fraser because the numbers in the Senate had been manipulated by that denizen of upstanding morality Joh Bjelke Petersen.
In sporting parlance - the draft was rorted, the umpire seduced and the elected government dudded. Never forget.

City's winter wonderland
ACCORDING to records Launceston's recent thick blanket of snow is a one in at least 50-year event. Interestingly; it's also fair to say, that it's a one-in-50-year event that school children excitedly jumped out of bed on (above all things) an actual school day. Now that's rare by anyone's stretch of their imagination. How unique was Wednesday morning - just bonza!

Lake Malbena development
THE inappropriate development proposal for Halls Island located on Lake Malbena highlights a failure of the democratic process and provides an insight into the influence of developers who are salivating at the prospect of privileged, exclusive access to some of the world's most prized World Heritage Wilderness areas. What they, and the Tasmanian government, fail to grasp is that they are systematically degrading the very essence of what they are seeking to exploit. Tourism that degrades wilderness values is not 'eco-tourism' it is eco-vandalism.
I am not opposed to development - it just needs a focus on protecting, restoring and building resilience into our World Heritage Areas. Australia has many unique ecosystems and species that are listed as threatened and endangered; they need support.
Now is the time to listen to the experts and protect Tasmania's amazing World Heritage Wilderness.

Mainland aged care heartbreak
MY heart breaks to see what is happening across the aged care sector on the mainland but so much of this could have been prevented. Tasmania had devastating outbreaks in facilities in the North West back in April, so why have we not applied what was learned from that situation? The pandemic has exposed systemic failure across the industry but we shouldn't need a fresh outbreak or government say-so before implementing better procedures based on what we already know.
The need for training in infection control, availability and instruction in the correct usage of PPE, and the risks posed by staff working across multiple facilities all came to light at the time.
