Inspector Doug Oosterloo said the 47-year-old Wynyard man and his 20-year-old son were walking the Mt Anne circuit when they became disoriented.
He said about 7.15pm the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre detected the activation of a personal locator beacon in the Southwest National Park near Mt Anne.
"Tasmania Police was advised of the coordinates and search operations commenced. The Tasmania Police Westpac Rescue Helicopter was deployed, however on its first attempt was forced to turn back due to low cloud and heavy rain," Inspector Oosterloo said.
"A second attempt at 10:40pm was successful and both walkers were found safe and well."
In other news:
The two men had been walking the circuit over three days and were due out on Sunday evening, but had lost the track before activating the beacon.
"Things can change rapidly and even the most capable bushwalkers can encounter problems. These men were not expecting to become lost. Fortunately, they were well equipped and had the good sense to carry a personal locator beacon, which greatly assisted in their rescue," Inspector Oosterloo said.
"Hazardous conditions forecast for the next few days may impede potential rescue operations. With this in mind, walkers need to take extra precautions."
