Sherriff Agencies' Fishing and Outdoor division has released five brown trout from Liawenee into the lake, offering prizes with a total value of $3500 to the anglers who can catch them.

Sales director at Sherriff agencies Matt Sherriff said he hoped the competition would gain more interest in the lake.

"We're trying to get interest in water that's probably not utilised that well, and being in a rural community it's great to see people going out that way rather than fishing in the main lakes," he said.

"It's a body of water that can take a lot more visitors and a lot more pressure but doesn't get used as much as other lakes like Four Springs."

Huntsman Lake is an artificial lake located south of Deloraine near Meander.

Mr Sherriff said Inland Fisheries had noted an increase in fishing licenses purchased by Tasmanian fishers.

"It's [fishing] so good for mental health, it really is," he said.

"To get people out of town and into an area where it's relaxing, you can clear the mind."

Meander Valley mayor Wayne Johnston said while Four Springs Lake's proximity to Launceston made it more popular, a day trip to Hunstman was still doable.

"With Huntsman Lake out here it's less than an hour's trip from Launceston on good road ... and with a lot of fish in it supposedly, I'm unable to catch any though," he said.
