According to police, a glass bottle was used during an incident at Princes Square about 3.50pm on Wednesday, July 29.
Police said a 33-year-old man was approached by two males, who demanded cash before assaulting him.
The alleged victim fled to the Brisbane Street Mall, where two people again approached him and again demanded cash, before one person struck him with a glass bottle.
Detective Sergeant Peter Roberts said the alleged victim was expected to make a full recovery.
Police have said the three people were not known to each another.
The 18-year-old was detained by police and is set to appear in the Launceston Court of Petty Sessions on August 2.
