Emergency services were called to the scene at the intersection of Wellington and Paterson streets after the 28-year-old from Kings Meadows crashed a Kawasaki motorcycle into a Suzuki hatch.
In a statement, Tasmania Police stated that initial investigations indicated the motorcyclist was driving "well in excess of the posted speed limit", had run a red light and alcohol may have been a factor.
The motorcycle was travelling south on Wellington Street when it hit the Suzuki, which was travelling east on Paterson Street.
