Scientists have confirmed a great white shark attacked a young boy at Stanley two weeks ago.

Lucas Arnott was fishing with his father and two other men on July 17 when a great white launched itself out of the water and "grabbed" the boy out of the boat.
The Arnott family released a statement via Tasmania Police on Tuesday saying the boy was recovering from his injuries.

CSIRO marine scientists examined the life jacket and concluded the damage is consistent with a great white shark of about 3.6-3.7 metres.
"This has been a traumatic event for the boy and his family, and they are thankful for the continued privacy they are being afforded to enable their son to fully recover," the statement read.
"Whilst this has been an extraordinary event, it highlights the importance of wearing a well maintained and correctly fitted life jacket as that, combined with the bravery of his father, helped save the boy's life."
