Residents raised concerns about safety when turning from Gravelly Beach road onto the highway.

The original plan was for the road between Rosevears Drive and Gravelly Beach Road to be widen with its shoulders sealed and a footpath added.

The Department of Transport also planned to improve sight lines and add a right-hand turn lane from the highway onto Gravelly Beach Road.

But, Minister for Infrastructure Michael Ferguson said after meeting with locals he has decided to conduct more consultation about the plan.

"Both the government and locals are rightly concerned about the safety of that intersection," he said.

"It's in need of an upgrade and our discussion focused on the difficulties that drivers exiting Gravelly Beach Road experience in seeing oncoming traffic on the highway, particularly from Launceston."

He said a $14 million upgrade of the highway from Legana to Batman Bridge would proceed with work due to begin in Spring.

"The additional work on this one particular intersection can be scheduled without delaying the overall contracted works," Mr Ferguson said.

Gravelly Beach resident Barry Blenkhorn, who was part of the group who met with the Minister, said it was good to see the government had listened to their concerns.

He said the group wanted to see a roundabout built to make the area safer.

"We are very happy that the government now have decided to do a little bit more consultation," Mr Blenkhorn said.
