The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed another major event, with the Latrobe Carnival cancelled for 2020.

The Latrobe Bicycle Race Club made the announcement on Wednesday, basing its decision on:
- COVID 19 Safety requirements that would need to be adhered to - on the day of the carnival all our members are engaged in duties associated with the event and the club is not in a suitably financial position to allow for the payment of people to ensure the Safety plans are adhered to.
- Competitors- with the current border closures and the quarantine conditions that are presently in place - and no guarantee as to when they'll be lifted - the promoter will find it extremely difficult to attract riders to Tasmania.
- Sponsors - the success of the L B R C carnival depends on the generosity of the local business community but with many of those businesses suffering from curtailed trading due to the virus the committee consider it's inappropriate to ask them for support.
The committee has described the cancellation as a "hiccup", promising it will be working "extremely hard to ensure that the 2021 carnival will be back bigger and better".
ELSEWHERE IN SPORT
It is part of the Tasmanian Christmas Carnival series, which also Rosebery, Devonport and Burnie carnivals.
