Confirming Hobart Hurricanes general manager Scott Barnes' comments from last week that the Burnie City Council were aware that a lack of turf wickets to train on had counted against the ground in what will be a congested WBBL06, Mayor Steve Kons said the issue was one that "was discussed in a recent meeting with Cricket Tasmania".
He went on to say "we look forward to partnering with them to ensure West Park has the necessary infrastructure to support WBBL into the future".
The lack of practice wickets will likely rule West Park out of hosting the WBBL Hurricanes this summer, with just one weekend of matches in Tasmania scheduled due to a three week Sydney hub with West Park only able to host one high level match a day.
Cricket North West president Shane Crawford said he was supportive of the potential move with the Burnie venue the Hurricanes' Coastal home.
"We have looked at what some of the priority projects are from an infrastructure perspective and there can often be funding whether that is through Cricket Australia or other channels, but turf training wickets at Burnie would be advantageous,'' he said.
"That is not only help for maintaining the games, but adding to that, so we would support any push from a Cricket North West point of view for those infrastructure improvements."
Crawford admitted disappointment that the Hurricanes were unlikely to be playing in the region, and as such would not have that contest in mind when the Cricket North West fixtures for next summer were locked in, which is likely to happen very soon.
However, in a summer where they may have to compete with an AFL grand final, there would be room for some flexibility if the WBBL fixture changed enough to see a game or two in Burnie.
The Tasmanian Hobart Hurricanes fixtures are set down for October 24 and 25, with games against Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Sixers scheduled.
