Public Health Services acting-director Scott McKeown said the new case was a young woman who had been in hotel quarantine after returning to Tasmania from Victoria.
He said the woman was being treated at the Royal Hobart Hospital and Public Health had begun contact tracing.
The state last recorded a new coronavirus case 65 days ago.
All active cases of coronavirus in Tasmania were cleared on June 12.
Premier Peter Gutwein said Tasmanians should expect to see coronavirus cases identified in the state into the future.
He said it was important to acknowledge the case was picked up in hotel quarantine.
Mr Gutwein said there were about 600 people quarantined in hotels in Tasmania and another 1000 people quarantined within homes.
Public Health Services will provide an update on the new coronavirus case on Tuesday.
