Last month UTAS announced it was facing a $30 to $34 million loss of revenue this year followed by a $60 million loss next year and $120 million loss in 2022.

Leading tertiary education providers on the main land have also announced plans to cut jobs this week.

On Thursday, Monash University announced it would cut 277 full time jobs, meanwhile about 500 full time jobs at the University of New South Wales are expected to go.

Job losses at both institutions were related to covering the loss of income from international students bought on by the pandemic.

In an email sent to staff on Wednesday, vice chancellor Rufus Black said the university had been given the all clear to implement changes to the staff enterprise agreement.

In June, staff voted to accept those changes, which included forgoing a 2 per cent pay rise, in exchange for greater job security.

"An expert advisory panel, a national body made of union and university representatives, has independently assessed the financial impact of COVID-19 on our university, and has confirmed that we qualify as an institution where the financial impact is serious enough to justify significant change," Professor Black said in his email.

"This means that we are now in a position to progress budgetary restraint, such as holding salary levels and offering a voluntary options program to eligible staff, in a way that is respectful and helps us preserve our workforce as much as possible."

National Tertiary Education Union Tasmanian secretary Kelvin Michael said the decision to seek redundancies didn't shock members.

But he said there were still some lingering concerns about staff levels in the future.

"[We need] to be sure that if staff leave their jobs at UTAS that those staff who do remain don't, as a consequence, become overloaded in their work," Mr Michael said.

"There are some concerns being raised about who will do the work if people leave - we have raised that with university management through our regular discussions."

Mr Michael said some staff had already expressed interest in the redundancy program.

"Our role ... is to insure the voluntary redundancy program is run appropriately and in line with the staff agreement as well as the variations to that agreement," he said.

UTAS did not say how many jobs it was expecting to cut.
