"So close!!!" Tweeted the Trek-Segafredo team after the veteran Campbell Town rider's gutsy performance at the weekend.
With the "real-world" Tour postponed until August 29 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the race's traditional timeslot is being filled by a virtual version run on Zwift across three weekends.
Competing from his home in the Spanish city of Girona, Clarke led to within sight of the finish line of the hilly Casse-Pattes course.
Complete with flexed biceps and hand clapping emojis, Clarke's team added: "Our big horse @clarkeywilbur put in an impressive late attack and was overtaken just in the final meters taking a 4th place on the line."
The 35-year-old has not raced outdoors since the UAE Tour in February.
Clarke's teammate and fellow Tasmanian Richie Porte, also 35, is scheduled to lead the Trek-Segafredo charge from August 29 in what will be his 10th Tour.
Porte is expected to resume racing at the one-day Mont Ventoux Challenge in France on August 6.
Hobart's ironman triathlete Cam Wurf, 36, represented Team INEOS in the virtual Tour stage and was in the front group of 38 with 10km to go.
