Changes enforced by club mergers and then the coronavirus have ultimately ended up with what league chiefs believe is the ideal geographical split and an indisputably fair roster.

The newly drawn-up NPL Tasmania schedule will see the eight teams play each other home and away over 14 rounds.

This followed the merger between last season's whipping boys Clarence and top-four challengers Hobart Zebras which left the competition with five Hobart teams, two from Launceston and one from the North-West.

Competition manager Glen McNeill said Football Tasmania is delighted with the result, which kicks off with a cup round on Saturday.

"It sits well for me," he said.

"It's great for a whole host of reasons to get games going and not just top level but juniors and youth through to adults.

"There's a lot of good reasons for people to get out on the pitch and chase that bit of leather around."

McNeill said the unprecedented challenges posed by COVID-19 would continue to test the makeshift campaign which will incorporate cup rounds on July 11 and September 5 with semis and finals following the league season.

"The fixtures are locked in but we're willing to change if faced with something of high importance.

"If there is some key health problem we may have to be flexible and change things."

McNeill also welcomed the five-two-one regional split which looks set to remain for the foreseeable future.

"Very happy. It's a good geographical footprint.

"When we had the push for 10 teams, we would love to see another Launceston team, but with natural selection we have fallen back to eight."

"This ticks all the boxes and it should be a very competitive competition."

The statewide redesign also leaves eight-team leagues across the Northern Championship competitions including the women's plus men's under-16s, under-18s and seniors.

McNeill said this make-up lends itself to each club staging big home days of five or six games against the same visitor.

A perfect example will be on the opening weekend of the league seasons at Windsor Park when Riverside will host Devonport in under-16, under-18, Northern Championship men, women and reserves fixtures with the NPL Tasmania clash headlining the day.

The league seasons are scheduled to finish on October 24.

The Women's Super League, in which Ulverstone is the only Northern team, will be one week longer, running a 15 round competition that will see each side playing each other three times. It will run from July 18 to November 1.
