Sergeant Scott McKinnell said weather conditions in the area hampered search efforts.
"The temperature in Derby was around zero at the time the man went missing, with heavy fog, which made conditions very tough," he said.
"Those conditions caused us to have grave concerns for the man and searching continued into the night."
The man was located deceased 400 m down stream from where he was last seen about 1:30 am this morning.
A report is being prepared for the coroner.
