The development application to the Dorset Council is proposing a pig abattoir at 345 Ten Mile Track, Springfield.
It will be built about seven kilometres away from the nearest town of Scottsdale and more than 500 metres from any residential building owned by others.
Scottsdale Pork previously relied on operators at Devonport to process its livestock but JBS Abattoir closed in 2018. Instead Tasmanian Quality Meats negotiated temporary lease of the processing facility but its lease expired in November 2019 before an extension was granted until July 2020.
IN OTHER NEWS:
The development application said therefore the business was looking to build a new processing plant to process its stock locally and hoped to have it operational by the end of October.
The proposed production capacity will be about 120 pigs per day, resulting in nine tonnes of product a day and about 2000 tonnes of meat per annum.
The site will have animal holding pens, process rooms, chiller rooms, anaerobic and aerobic ponds to filter wastewater and on-site irrigation to re-use all wastewater.
The estimated traffic increase on the road was considered small with about 36 additional vehicles per day.
The abattoir will operate from 5am to 6pm, Monday to Friday and will employ about 10 people. With an anticipated 10 extra days per year needed to meet holiday demand, lost production and lack of livestock.
The DA can be viewed on the council's website and is available for public comment until July 10.
