RACT general manager of mobility services Darren Moody said there had been no specific restrictions for driving instructors over the peak pandemic period.

"However, the RACT along with the Department of State Growth, made a decision that we wouldn't put our staff and students at risk so we closed operations for a period of about eight weeks," Mr Moody said.

"When we made a decision to reopen - we examined how many new cases there were and there have been none for a number of weeks."

Mr Moody added the driving school has taken COVID safe precautions including temperature checks and asking health questions.

The RACT is part of a state government pilot program allowing them to conduct P1 tests.

As Tasmania begins to ease COVID-19 restrictions, a backlog of learner drivers in need of lessons and P1 tests has been created.

Mr Moody said RACT had been "extremely busy" since reopening.

"Particularly in the North and South we're out about three weeks at the moment and for P1 assessments we're out about five weeks," Mr Moody said.

"We trying to get through as many as we can to reduce the backlog and we're aware the Department of State Growth are working through a substantial backlog as well.

"If you're able to sit a [P1] test in that five to eight week period I'd certainly encourage you to make a booking now.

"At this point in time we probably don't see it coming back really quickly to less [waiting] time."

Mr Moody said the state government's recent announcement to permanently remove the L2 practical assessment wasn't unexpected, given Tasmania was the only remaining state to have such a test.
