He's also spent time with his family at Bridport though a visit to his mother is still off limits.

After guiding the state through the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr Gutwein has spent only a handful of nights at home in Northern Tasmania in the past three months.

Since March, he has fronted about 70 daily media briefings on the pandemic.

"Everyone has had to make sacrifices and my family has been no different," Mr Gutwein said.

"I'm very thankful that (wife) Mandy carried the load at home and the kids did their bit as well.

"I haven't seen my mum yet who is in the high risk group as I have a lot more contact with people than my siblings so I'm going to be careful for a little while longer."

Ms Gutwein-Burke owns popular Launceston business Inside Home and Gifts which she has re-opened.

"On Saturday because Mandy has reopened her shop in Launceston I hung out the washing and tended to Alan and Teddy (our pet goats), and our other animals and tidied up the backyard a bit before heading to Bridport," Mr Gutwein said.

Once the owner of a hotel and bottle shop at Bridport he still clearly loves the North-East coastal town.

"I do feel very relaxed here and the people are great and very welcoming.

"I love getting coffee at the bakery early each morning and having a chat.

"People always give me their views on a range of matters and It's a nice way to remain connected to the community."

Bridport Cafe owner Linda Arnison was happy to serve the Gutwein family on Sunday morning.

"He's one of the locals and he's done a great job," Ms Arnison said.

"Our business is slowly picking up but I don't think we're ready to open our borders just yet, we have to make sure the elderly are looked after."

Being away from home for so long, Mr Gutwein has managed to improve his technological skills.

"It's been a challenging time for all families and mine has been no different, but I am very thankful they stayed safe and healthy, and one positive is that our IT, FaceTime and Zoom skills have certainly gone to another level," he said.
