As reported in The Examiner last week, the junior competition plans to begin its 2020 campaign on July 19 and will do so should it receive the go-ahead from state government.

AFL Tasmania chief executive Trish Squires said the proposed seasons for NTJFA and its North-West and Southern counterparts would run through to October.

"We are really confident that we will be playing junior football in 2020," Squires said.

"This is a great result and really important for the thousands of young boys and girls that play footy across our state.

"It is subject to government advice but we are planning for a season to take place from mid-July."

The NTJFA had registered 90 boys and girls teams for its 2020 season before the coronavirus hit.

NTJFA president Paul House said many clubs had returned to training in recent weeks and would be buoyed by the opportunity to train in groups of 20 in the near future.

"We had a really positive board meeting last week and enthusiasm is building by the day for the season," House said.

"It is fantastic for the kids in Northern Tasmania that will be able to play the game they love, this year.

"We will be playing a football season, unless of course state government restrictions don't allow us to."

Meanwhile, AFL Tasmania is pushing for crowds of up to 500 people to be allowed at community football matches when stage three restrictions come into place on July 13.

A submission to the state government has outlined how venues could adhere to proper social distancing and hygiene practices while catering for a crowd figure that clubs believe to be the "minimum required for viability".

The submission outlines a raft of measures ranging from the regular cleaning of high-traffic surfaces - such as stairwell railings and door handles - to the adaption or avoidance of grandstands.

The 500-person crowd limit would not include players, coaching staff, officials or volunteers.
