The 16-year-old and a 24-year-old Legana man were charged on Monday after a lockbox at the hospital was broken into and about 30 sets of keys were stolen in the early hours of the morning.

Five cars were taken, and it has been alleged 20 of the sets of keys were found in one of the stolen cars at Perth where police arrested the 24-year-old.

The teenager was arrested in a separate incident, after he was allegedly found behind the wheel of another one of the stolen cars.

Launceston Inspector Darren Hopkins said CCTV footage showed three or four people involved, and it was alleged those responsible had attempted to break into a car on Frankland Street before the thefts at the hospital.

The teenager was charged with three counts of motor vehicle stealing, aggravated evade police, driving without a licence, stealing, destroy property, and seven counts of breaching bail.

He was detained to appear in court on Tuesday morning.

The 24-year-old man was expected to appear in an out of hours court on Monday night, charged with two counts of motor vehicle stealing, stealing and firearms offences.

All of the vehicles have since been recovered, but police are continuing to search for other potential offenders.

The cars were stolen about 1.30am Monday morning.

Two were found at Invermay and another was found dumped at St Helens.
